A lit village on a dining table used to mean real tea lights, which is a decision about children, pets, tablecloths and sleeves. These come with three flameless LED tea lights in the box, and each house is open at the back, so the light slides in from behind and the windows glow with nothing burning inside.

The palette is the traditional one, and it is the reason to pick this set over our white ones: red, green and beige under glitter roofs sits with the decorations most people already own, from the ornaments on the tree to the ribbon on the mantel. The three houses are different styles, so the group reads as a village rather than as a product in triplicate.

Glazed ceramic is heavier and less fragile than it looks, which matters for something unpacked and repacked year after year. Three houses is the size of group that works on a windowsill, a hall table or either side of a mantel clock; our six-house sets go further and add a remote, if the surface is long.
