Description

The 4 by 6 is the easiest print to get hold of, and an upright oval is the most flattering thing anyone can do to one. The window narrows the top and bottom, loses whatever was happening in the corners and leaves a head and shoulders in the middle, which is how family photographs were framed for a century before rectangles took over.

Cast flowers run around the opening in gold, a warmer and busier border than a plain molding, so this suits a photograph that is itself fairly plain. A snapshot with a cluttered background gets worse inside an ornate frame, while a portrait shot against a wall or a sky gets better.
