What this one is for

Metal bookends work and look like office equipment; decorative ones usually look right and fall over. These are the metal ones with the macrame on the front, which is the only arrangement that solves both problems: the load is carried by a ribbed steel frame with smooth edges, and what you see from the room is knotted cotton and a hanging tassel.

On an open shelf that matters more than it does in a bookcase, because the ends of the row are the part everyone sees. A pair of these holds a run of hardbacks, magazines, record sleeves or box files upright, and turns the two ends of the shelf into the most finished-looking part of it.

The bases carry non-skid anti-scratch padding, so they grip a painted shelf or a wooden desk instead of skating along it and leaving a line behind. The macrame is knotted by hand, so the two in a pair are close but never identical.

If this is a cover rather than a filled cushion, the fill row above will say so. The styling and sizing guide covers the insert rule and what a set of two actually contains.
