What this one is for

The whole argument for melamine is that it survives the floor. These are shatter-proof, chip-resistant and scratch-resistant, made from BPA-free material, which is why sets like this end up in houses with small children, on boats and campers, and on patios where a stone floor turns one dropped plate into a replacement order. Six place settings of three pieces each covers a family table.

The finish is not the plain plastic look people expect. The surface carries a blue ice-crack texture, deep navy and matte rather than glossy, which reads as ceramic at arm's length and, more usefully, does not compete with the food on it. Navy is also the color that hides the marks a pale melamine plate collects.

The care instructions are worth following exactly, because melamine is the one material people ruin by treating it like ceramic. Top rack of the dishwasher only, at a maximum of 70 degrees Celsius or 158 Fahrenheit, and avoid high-heat or intensive wash cycles. It is not microwave safe and not oven safe: reheat in something else and serve on these.
