What this one is for

A lumbar cushion is the only shape in this section bought for comfort rather than looks. On a deep sofa the seat is longer than most backs, and a 12 by 20 in the gap fixes the posture problem that a stack of square cushions makes worse. It is also the shape that finishes a made bed, laid across the front of the pillows.

The proportion matters more than the color here. Twelve inches deep is enough to support without pushing you forward, and twenty across is wide enough to stay behind you when you shift. Squares in this position either get squashed flat or end up on the floor within an hour.

Mustard gives the pair some presence in what is usually a hidden position; if the cushion spends most of its life behind someone's back, a warm color at least makes it look deliberate when the room is empty.
