A lumbar is bought for the body first. Twelve inches deep supports the lower back on a sofa whose seat is longer than most people's legs, and twenty across stays put when you move, which is where a stack of square cushions fails: they squash flat or slide sideways within an hour of anybody sitting down properly.

Covers only, with no inserts in the box. A 12 by 20 insert matches the cover and a 14 by 20 makes a firmer cushion that pushes back harder, which is worth considering if this one is going to be leaned on at a desk or in bed rather than just completing a sofa.

The plain printed face is the reason to take this version over our woven stripe in the same shape. A solid olive with a crosshatch print behind it carries no pattern to argue with the sofa, so it works in a room that already has stripes or florals somewhere and cannot take another line in the cushion that sits in the middle of everything.

Two covers in the set, with an invisible zipper along the bottom seam and a smooth velvety hand rather than a true texture. Fold the insert, push it through, then open it out inside so it reaches into both ends instead of bunching in the middle of the cover.
