What this one is for

An upright oval is a portrait format in the old sense of the word. It narrows the top and bottom of a 4 by 6 print into a rounded window that puts the head and shoulders in the middle and quietly loses whatever was in the corners, which is why old family photographs were framed this way and why one picture in an oval reads differently from the same picture in a rectangle.

Sage green keeps it from being a period piece. The color is muted enough to belong in a current room rather than a Victorian one, so the shape brings the sentiment and the finish keeps it modern. It works particularly well among plants and on natural wood, where the gray-green picks up what is already there.
