A rectangular 8 by 10 in black with ornate vintage relief: the plainest finish we make at this size, and the one to repeat.
Description
A gallery wall needs a majority. If every frame on it is different the wall reads as clutter, and the way out is to pick one frame, buy several, and let the unusual ones be exceptions to it. Black is the finish for that job, because it is the only one that never competes with the photograph inside it or the wall color behind it.
At 8 by 10 it also does the structural work. Two or three black rectangles placed at the corners and the center of an arrangement give it a shape that the smaller frames can hang off, and because the opening is a full rectangle nothing gets cropped: group photographs, children's artwork and bought prints all go in whole.
The molding is still ornately detailed rather than plain, with a brushed hand-finished surface, and that is what separates it from a black frame bought for an office corridor. Durable polyresin, clear stain-resistant glass, an easel stand and built-in metal hooks for vertical or horizontal hanging, and a backing that opens without tools.
