Vintage Picture Frame, 8 x 10 in, Black and Bronze

Description

Bronze is the cooler and dirtier of the two metals we brush over a black frame, and that is the reason to choose it. Yellow gold announces itself from the far side of a room; bronze stays closer to the dark field of the molding, so the frame reads as a single object rather than as a bright outline drawn around a photograph.

It belongs in rooms where the metal has already been decided: dark door handles, an iron shelf bracket, a lamp base in rubbed bronze. On a gallery wall built mostly from gilt frames, two or three of these spaced through the arrangement break the rhythm, which is what stops a wall of frames from looking like one order placed in one afternoon.

The opening is a full rectangle, so an 8 by 10 print goes in uncropped: a group photograph, a certificate or a sheet of children's artwork keeps its corners. Durable polyresin with a hand-finished surface, clear stain-resistant glass, an easel stand and metal hooks built into the back, and a backing that opens without tools.
