Vintage Picture Frame, 8 x 10 in, Walnut

Description

Brown is the break in a wall of gold and black. A walnut frame reads as furniture rather than as decoration, so it ties the arrangement to the oak shelf under it, to a leather chair or to a cane headboard, and it gives the eye somewhere to rest between the brighter frames on either side.

The ornament behaves differently without a metal highlight on it. Nothing catches the light, so what you notice is the profile and the depth of the carving instead of the shine, and the frame looks older and plainer than the gilt versions of the same molding. That suits a study, a landing or the wall above a wooden dresser.

The walnut is a hand-finished surface on cast polyresin rather than a sawn board, which is why the detail runs as deep here as on the brushed finishes. Clear stain-resistant glass over a full 8 by 10 print, an easel stand and built-in metal hooks for either orientation, and a back that opens without tools.
