A small square 4 by 4 frame in green with gold, with ornate cast relief on a short, even border.
Description
A square frame does something no rectangle can: it has no orientation. Nothing about it is upright or landscape, so it sits on a bookshelf between taller frames without setting a direction, and the eye stops on it for exactly that reason. Four equal sides also mean the ornament repeats evenly the whole way round.
What belongs in it is a crop rather than a scene. A flower, a close-up, one face, a square picture taken on a phone and printed the way it was shot. Anything wide gives up too much to the format, and that is a decision worth making before ordering the print rather than after it arrives in the post.
Green with gold on the raised edges keeps a frame this small from disappearing into a shelf of books. Cast polyresin with a hand-finished surface, clear stain-resistant glass, an easel stand, built-in metal hanging hooks and a backing that opens without tools.
