AELS works in one narrow layer of a room: the part that sits on top of the furniture rather than replacing it. Cushions, covers, frames, baskets, lamps and the small cast pieces that hold a shelf together — a hundred and twelve designs, and not one of them needs a delivery slot, an assembly manual or a second pair of hands. It is a deliberately small brief, and it is the whole of what we do.
The material list is short on purpose, because a short list is one we can keep getting right. Thirty-three designs are cut in velvet, twenty are cast in polyresin, and the rest are cotton, linen, corduroy, chenille, plush, faux fur, microfiber, woven paper straw, stoneware, metal and wood. We keep coming back to velvet because it takes dense embroidery without puckering and holds a single flat color across a whole room; we keep coming back to polyresin because a frame needs real weight behind the glass or it goes over the first time a door slams.
The construction rules behind those materials are dull and they do not move. Fifty-one of the hundred and twelve go into a domestic machine exactly as they are sold. Where a cushion has a cover, that cover comes off — usually on a zip hidden in the seam, so the closure does not become the thing you look at. Twenty-nine cushions arrive filled and ready to use and seventeen are covers only, and which one you are buying is stated in the first line of the page rather than the fourth. A basket meant for a shelf stands up empty or it does not go into the range.
Sizes come from furniture rather than from a moodboard: 18 by 18 inches for the square cushions that suit most sofas, 20 by 11 for the lumbar ones, 85 by 30 for a three-seat sofa cover, and 4 by 6, 5 by 7 and 8 by 10 for the frames, because those are the sizes photographs are actually printed at. Prices run from $9.99 to $59.99 and the middle of the catalog sits at $21.99 — the range is priced so that changing four things in a room costs less than replacing one.
